It is an open secret by now that the upcoming iPhone 8 will come with support for wireless charging built-in. While earlier rumours claimed that the iPhone 8 will adopt the 'Qi' wireless charging standard used by Android manufacturers like Samsung and LG, a new report by Japanese fan site Mac Qtakara claims that iPhone 8 is expected to use Apple's own wireless charging units that adhere to the company's 'Made for iPhone'(MfI) program. This will force third-party manufacturers to pay Apple a certain sum of money in order to make wireless charging accessories.
Aside from being proprietary, the iPhone 8's wireless charging is expected to run at just 7.5 watts as compared to the 15watts supported by the Qi charging standard. Thus the iPhone 8's wireless charging is expected to be slower than its Android rivals. The speed offered by the Qi charging standard is already slower than wired charging.
It is not known at the moment whether the iPhone 8 will be compatible with industry standard Qi wireless charging pads. Apple could end up certifying only a few charging pads that support its 'half-power' implementation. This means that the vast majority of accessories available in the market and public wireless charging spots available in countries such as the USA will be incompatible with the iPhone 8.
In other news, a video appeared on Wiebo a few days ago hinting at the possible location of the TouchID scanner on the iPhone 8. The video shows a man feeding what looks like the iPhone 8 into a machine and then touching the Apple logo with his index finger after which code appears on a display.
The location of the TouchID sensor on the iPhone 8 has been a source of controversy. Earlier rumours pointed towards Apple embedding the fingerprint sensor underneath the display though that theory has been widely refuted by now. Going by the video, Apple could follow in the footsteps of Huawei and Samsung and implement a rear mounted fingerprint sensor on the iPhone 8 (in the Apple logo).
The iPhone 8 is expected to come with a striking bezel-less design, updated rear dual cameras with AR and depth of field features, am edge-to-edge TrueTone 5.8-inch OLED display, 3D face detection, IP68 waterproofing, an updated 3D touch module, rear facing laser technology for AR apps and more.
