Airtel VoLTE services go live in Mumbai, other circles to follow
India Airtel the largest Indian mobile network operator is reportedly going to launch 4G VoLTE services in the beginning of next week. Last year RIL had supported Jio 4G started services with VOLTE Technologies. Now Airtel will now be the second operator to exclude VOLTE based services. Unlike GO 4G Airtel owns 900 MHz spectrum to provide 2G networks. With VOLTE users with LTE networks and VOLTE enabled devices can make or receive calls via the VOLTE network. Users with LTE networks or GSM handsets will still be able to make calls as normaly .
Compared to calls made through 2G / 3G networks VOLTE based calls will be in HD quality and will be fast connected. During calling VOLTE network users can still access the internet. It has been suggested in the previous report that the company has partnered with Nokia to issue nationwide VOLTE services. The next week after launching for the first time in Mumbai the company will start the VOLTE service. In the coming weeks we expect the service to be launched in other metro cities. Even Idea is also planning to provide VOLTE services by the end of this year.
While Jio 4G is offering free voice calls and SMS to its users while Airtel can also offer free voice calls made over VOLTE network. The Jio 4G prepaid pack is offering low prices for unlimited calls for Rs 149. With the introduction of VOLTE features feature phones Jiophone has added Reliance to its feature phone users in its list of consumers. Airtel also announced its own 4G feature phones in the market soon. While the sales of 4G VOLTE smartphones have increased tremendously in the last four years 3G smartphones are now being viewed as an old one.
Counterpoint's latest report mentions one of every three phones sold in the last quarter of June. According to the VOLTE Smartphone Report more than 200 million 4G VOLTE enabled feature phones will be sold in the next five years. Unlike other major markets feature phones are ready for a decent market share in India. This major user base fights struggling to offer the best value pack to its customers
